Sudanese forces foil RSF attack on Babnousa

(MENAFN) The Sudanese army successfully repelled an assault by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the city of Babnousa in West Kordofan on Sunday, according to accounts from local witnesses.

Reports indicated that RSF fighters launched an artillery bombardment on the city before advancing with combat vehicles, but the army managed to fend off the attack.

Footage shared by Sudanese soldiers on social media appeared to confirm that government troops had pushed back RSF units and were sweeping the surrounding areas for remnants of the force.

Meanwhile, the Babnousa Emergency Room, a local relief organization, stated that the military had thwarted an RSF attempt to overrun the 22nd Infantry Division, though no details were provided regarding casualties or material damage. The group described Babnousa as a “ghost town,” noting that roughly 177,000 residents had already fled due to ongoing clashes between the two sides.

The RSF has not issued any statement regarding the incident.

In recent weeks, the army has reportedly conducted airdrops to supply its forces stationed in Babnousa, as the city continues to face repeated attacks from the RSF.

Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been gripped by a violent conflict between the national army and the RSF. Despite numerous mediation efforts by regional and international actors, the war has persisted, claiming thousands of lives and displacing millions.
