UN Chief Condemns Drone Strikes on Civilians in Sudan
"The Secretary-General is appalled by reports that dozens of children and other civilians have been killed in the latest deadly attacks in South Kordofan," stated spokesman Stephane Dujarric in an official release.
According to the statement, three separate drone strikes occurred in the town of Kalogi on Dec. 4. Two of the strikes hit a kindergarten, while another targeted a hospital where injured individuals were receiving care.
Guterres denounced all assaults on civilian populations and infrastructure, cautioning that attacks on schools and medical facilities could constitute violations of international humanitarian law.
On the same day in North Kordofan, an aerial strike hit a humanitarian convoy delivering food aid to North Darfur, damaging a World Food Program truck and leaving the driver critically injured.
"The Secretary-General deplores this further attack on humanitarian operations at a time of dire needs," the statement emphasized.
Guterres called on all countries with influence over the conflicting parties to intervene immediately, leveraging their power to enforce a swift ceasefire and stop the flow of weapons that are intensifying the conflict.
He stressed that every party involved must honor their responsibilities under international law in all areas affected by the fighting in Sudan.
The ongoing civil war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which erupted in April 2023, has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions.
