Sudan Reports Casualties in RSF Strike on Power Station

(MENAFN) Deadly drone assaults by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) struck critical infrastructure in northern Sudan early Thursday, leaving casualties and plunging vast regions into darkness, local media confirmed.

The paramilitary group unleashed intensive aerial bombardment on Atbara, capital of River Nile state, deliberately targeting electrical grid installations and other strategic locations, Sudan News reported citing sources on the ground.

RSF forces hit a power substation directly, triggering cascading blackouts throughout River Nile state and extending into adjacent Red Sea state territories, according to the Sudanese outlet's local contacts.

Surveillance networks monitoring River Nile state documented that Al-Maqran power station came under attack from multiple unmanned aerial vehicles deployed in coordinated fashion, the coverage noted.

Sudanese air defense systems successfully neutralized several incoming drones, though others penetrated defenses and impacted the Atbara installation, igniting a contained blaze. The strikes generated extensive electrical failures affecting River Nile, Red Sea state, and portions of Omdurman.

Two civil defense personnel deployed at the Atbara power complex died in the bombardment, the report confirmed, while multiple primary transformers suffered critical destruction.

Local observers described the RSF deploying substantial quantities of explosive-laden drones against Atbara, Al-Damer, and additional urban centers, including Atbara airport. Citizens documented thunderous blasts as defensive anti-aircraft systems engaged the incoming threats.

Witnesses indicated the drones originated from positions within the Kordofan region, specifically from Bara city in North Kordofan, territory held by RSF forces for over sixty days.

The three Kordofan states—North, West, and South—have endured sustained violent clashes between government forces and the RSF, compelling tens of thousands to abandon their homes.

Across Sudan's 18 states, the RSF maintains control over all five Darfur region states westward, excluding certain northern sections of North Darfur remaining under military authority. Government forces conversely hold majority areas across the remaining 13 states spanning southern, northern, eastern, and central zones, including capital city Khartoum.

The armed confrontation between Sudanese military forces and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023, has claimed thousands of lives while forcing millions into displacement.
