Sudan Returns to Full Participation in IGAD, Ending Two-Year Freeze
The ministry said the government decided to reactivate its role following a “positive statement” from IGAD’s secretariat reaffirming its commitment to the organization’s founding frameworks for regional cooperation.
The statement added that “the organization pledged noninterference in the internal affairs of member states, including full recognition of Sudan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, national unity and the safety of its existing state institutions.”
Sudan also emphasized that international peace and security remain among its “top priorities” and said it is taking steps to safeguard them at both regional and global levels, viewing regional cooperation as fundamental to broader international engagement.
Khartoum had frozen its IGAD membership on January 20, 2024, citing oversteps by the organization, including the decision to place Sudan’s situation on the agenda of the bloc’s 42nd summit without prior consultation.
