Fire in N. Darfur Displacement Camp Leaves tens of Families Homeless
The blaze struck Al-Omda camp in the Tawila area, destroying around 50 shelters and partially damaging others. Families affected by the fire were relocated to open spaces within the locality.
The camp hosts thousands of internally displaced people living in makeshift shelters made of wood, straw, and other highly flammable materials. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
Earlier on Tuesday, another fire at the camp displaced 237 families, destroying 158 shelters and damaging 79 more. Last week, a separate fire killed a child and affected roughly 1,500 families, destroying 250 shelters, according to the Tawila Emergency Rooms Coordination Council.
Sudan has been embroiled in conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and displacing around 13 million people, creating one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, according to UN reports.
