Pope Urges Global Ceasefire, Peace Across Conflict Zones
"May the international community’s attention to the tragedy of this war not waver," Pope Leo said, voicing his solidarity with the people of Lebanon and stressing that he felt "closer than ever" to the nation amid its ongoing struggles. He called for a ceasefire in these areas and emphasized the need for urgent efforts to reach peaceful solutions.
Pope Leo also reminded the global community of the moral obligation to protect civilians from the ravages of war, a principle enshrined in international law. He appealed for an end to the war in Sudan, marking the third anniversary of the conflict, and urged the warring factions to "silence their weapons" and engage in unconditional dialogue.
The Pope's remarks come as peace talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the US have stalled since earlier this year, with both Moscow and Kyiv citing the US's focus on the Iran war as a contributing factor to the pause in negotiations.
Meanwhile, Israel's attacks on Lebanon, which have been ongoing since March 2, have led to over 2,000 deaths and more than 6,000 injuries. The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, has also claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions.
