UN Warns Millions Returning to Sudan Face Fragile Conditions

(MENAFN) Nearly four million people have voluntarily returned to different parts of Sudan, but widespread destruction and limited basic services are making these returns difficult to sustain, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

As stated by reports citing the agency, most returnees have settled in Al Jazirah and Khartoum states, where many are arriving to find damaged infrastructure, disrupted services, and uncertain living conditions.

IOM Deputy Director General for Management and Reform SungAh Lee said that returning home should normally signal the start of recovery, but instead many returnees are confronting destroyed housing and essential services. She stressed that access to basic needs, safe shelter, and livelihood opportunities is essential for ensuring returns are sustainable and dignified.

The agency noted that Sudan’s conflict, which began in April 2023, has triggered one of the world’s largest displacement crises. At its peak, nearly 12 million people were forced to flee affected areas, while more than four million crossed into neighboring countries.

According to IOM figures, around nine million people remain internally displaced within Sudan.

The report also highlighted ongoing challenges in recovery, including damaged water and electricity systems, weakened health services, destroyed housing in Khartoum, and disrupted agricultural production in Al Jazirah.

In addition, IOM warned that its 2026 crisis response plan for Sudan remains significantly underfunded, with a gap of $97.2 million. The agency also projected that more than two million additional people may return to Khartoum alone during the year, increasing pressure on already strained infrastructure and services.
